A Day in the Life of a Lost World
6 hour tour
When you are hungry for a deeper understanding
of the three great environments of Louisiana's
coastal wetlands (the bottomland hardwoods, the
Cypress-Tupelo swamps, and the freshwater and
saltwater marshes), it's time for our whole day tour.
We will greet you with hot coffee and sweet Creole rice cakes,
before we set off to explore the marsh. You will have the
opportunity to step off the boat and walk on the springy
"floating islands" of vegetation that the old-timers
called "the prairie." You will see us harvest our
nets, and then we will move on to the East Pearl River,
where we will stop for a delicious Louisiana feast.
From there, we will show you the high ground along
the river where the "cheniers" or oak ridges mark
the bottomland hardwood forest, once extensive,
now vanishing. Then it's on to the incomparable
Cypress-Tupelo swamps, where we will
harvest catfish from slat traps, pull crawfish
from baited traps, experience the unforgettable
blue-green twilight of the swamps, and explore the lore
of the pirates, the loggers and trappers, and the escaped slaves.
